Pirelli and British Superbikes

The inception of a new single make tyre rule in British Superbikes has been an exciting and challenging project for Pirelli UK.
The British Superbike (BSB) Championship has long been recognised as the most prestigious and competitive domestic motorcycle race series in the World, and the Pirelli one make arrangement has made the racing even closer! Riders who have progressed through the Pirelli backed series in the last two years have included new World Supersport champion Cal Crutchlow, British Superbike Champions Shane Byrne and Leon Camier plus World Superbike stars Leon Haslam and Sylvain Guintoli. The 2010 BSB series sees the return of World Superbike Champion Neil Hodgson up against such Championship favourites such as Yukio Kagayama, Ryuichi Kiyonari, Josh Brookes, Stuart Easton, Tommy Hill and Simon Andrews.

The one-tyre ruling was introduced in 2008 to ensure a fairer tyre supply and provide more of a level playing field, ultimately providing a closer, more thrilling race series. An example of the new rule in action was the Brands Hatch round of the 2009 British Superbike Championship featuring ultra close racing and only three-hundredths of a second covering the top ten best lap times.

Pirelli has developed a range of Diablo tyres for both the Superbike and Supersport championships, giving a choice of three different specifications of dry Diablo front and rear tyres. Wet and Intermediate tyre choices are also available across both championships in the form of the Diablo Rain and Diablo Wet products.

A team of 17 tyre technicians will supply and fit around 5500 Pirelli tyres for both BSB and BSS classes over a race weekend. The technicians are backed up by two technical co-ordinators who work directly with the race teams to advise and analyse throughout practice and qualifying.

The new Diablo tyres have been developed at World Championship level, in association with the World Superbike and Supersport Championships. All of the Diablo products that we use at the circuits are available over the counter as a customer tyre. Any customer using a 16.5' front wheel can source identical tyres via their local Pirelli stockist and utilise the exact same tyres as their racing heroes.
